Those who remember (but really, who could forget?) Supreme’s golden age fondly remember garish Louis Vuitton monogram jeans, $200 box logo hoodies and programming bots on Thursday drops. The New York skate brand’s 2016-2018 run had the streetwear community captivated. However, since the pandemic attention around brands like Supreme, Bape and Off-White has plummeted. Maybe the hypebeast market matured, or maybe Supreme’s off-the-wall pieces and prices became normalized, but their new SS25 catalogue is proof that the brand is still attention-worthy. With inventive twists on classic pieces of Americana, the SS25 collection from Supreme prove’s the brand’s legitimacy as a designer.
In the past decades, high-fashion brands have introduced their own takes on workwear and western wear, becoming mainstays of American fashion. However, LV and Bode have recently gotten into an area that Supreme has been excelling at for over thirty years. With a background in skateboarding, the brand has put combining durable functionality with loud style at its forefront. Many pieces in this collection are a perfect combination of American heritage clothing and quintessential Supreme flashiness. A key artifact of this catalogue’s artistry in Americana is the Ponyhair Varsity Jacket. Using a material inseparable from the Old West spread over a varsity silhouette represents Supreme’s ingenuity perfectly.
Many brands are still playing catch-up to Supreme in combining rugged and preppy aesthetics. Similarly, in the Old English Canvas Work Jacket Supreme takes a simple chore coat and elevates it. The huge varsity lettering transforms what would be a humble jacket into anything but modest.
Recently, Supreme’s leather is updating American staples with popping details. Especially with the Schott and Vanson jackets released this season, Supreme is keeping alive the biker aesthetic that are some of the building blocks of Americana—another motif brands like Chrome Hearts and Rick Owens have made their niche. The Leather Clip Jacket in particular combines bulky, shiny tumbled leather with sleek, industrial fireman clips to keep the garment dynamic. Similarly, the Schott Car Coat adds a wild, faux cheetah fur lining to make an otherwise plain, leather blazer captivating.
Supreme continues to revive wardrobe staples with the Sea Island Cotton Suit. This piece is rebelliously styled with the Last Supper Leather Belt, embossed all over with Da Vinci’s painting, to show that it was not meant to be worn anywhere near the office.
For the past decade, vintage American aesthetics in fashion have nearly become the norm, and brands have struggled to create truly new designs. Alternatively, Supreme continues to lean into rugged Americana to lead the charge in workwear through niche leather and tailoring styles. Supreme’s collections now are just as refreshing as they were in 2016. Quickly and excitingly, Supreme is becoming one the great American designers of the 21st century. The SS25 collection is Supreme doing what it does best – flipping the script on heritage American pieces.
